The Sustainable Oakland Program
The Sustainable Oakland program, housed in Environmental Services, supports Oakland’s progress in becoming a more sustainable City – a community in which all people have the opportunity to live safe, happy, healthy and fulfilling lives, now and into the future. The Sustainable Oakland program supports Oakland’s progress in becoming a more sustainable City through:
- Facilitating collaborative approaches to improve Oakland's sustainability performance
- Tracking, reporting on and promoting Oakland’s sustainability story
Program History
The Sustainable Oakland program is an evolution of the Sustainable Community Development Initiative, established by Oakland's City Council in 1997. Council then unanimously adopted a policy framework called "Building the Sustainable Economy: An Opportunity for Oakland.” It also established a Working Group, which was charged with formulating a set of sustainable community development recommendations and action steps.
