Important Changes to Trash, Recycling and Compost Services for Oakland Businesses
Effective July 1, 2015
Starting July 1, the City of Oakland is introducing new trash, recycling and compost services that will carry our city forward as an environmental leader. Your business is an important part of these efforts. Here is what you need to know about important changes coming in July:
- Waste Management of Alameda County (WMAC) will continue to be the exclusive provider of trash collection services in Oakland. Contact WMAC at 510-613-8700.
- Recycling is mandatory for all Oakland businesses. Cans, bottles, paper and cardboard recycling is an 'open market' system - that means you can shop around for the best deal. Click here for a list of service providers. If you are having difficulty finding a recycling provider, Oakland businesses can receive service from California Waste Solutions (CWS) upon request. Contact CWS at (510) 836-6200 for more information.
- The Small Business Recycling Program expired on June 30. Service may continue uninterrupted for current subscribers, but your rates are likely to change starting July 1. Call your service provider - California Waste Solutions (CWS) in West/North Oakland and WMAC in East Oakland - for details and new rates. Regardless of which company currently provides your recycling service you can shop around for the recycling service provider that works best for you. Click here for a list of service providers.
- Compost collection service (food scraps, food-soiled paper and plant debris) will be provided exclusively by WMAC effective July 1, 2015. For details or to subscribe to service, contact WMAC at 510-613-8700. If you currently receive compost collection service from a provider other than WMAC, work with your provider to transition your service to WMAC by July 1, 2015.
Changes in Service Rates and Billing
Currently business customers are billed each month for the previous month's services. Beginning in July, you will be billed in advance -- the bill for services in a given month will be sent at the beginning of that month. Consequently, in late June you will receive two separate bills: one in arrears for June services and one in advance for July services. After July you will receive monthly bills at the start of each month. Contact WMAC at 510-613-8700 for more information.
Starting July 1, your rates for trash and compost services will change when the City's new Zero Waste system takes effect. Click here to view a rate table to see how your costs may change.
