Register to Lead a Volunteer Project on Earth Day, Saturday April 21, 2018!
Please register by Sunday, March 11, 2018
The City of Oakland is seeking site coordinators to lead cleaning and greening projects for the 24th Annual Oakland Earth Day.
Earth Day is Oakland’s largest annual volunteer cleaning and greening event! In 2017, over 2,500 volunteers contributed an estimated 8,300 hours at 93 Oakland Earth Day sites, including some projects on Friday and Sunday. Volunteers removed over 600 cubic yards of green waste and nearly 300 cubic yards of trash from Oakland’s streets, parks, creeks and shoreline!
Projects planned for the event include litter removal, habitat restoration, urban greening, and beautification.
As a site coordinator leading an Earth Day project, you will have access to:
• Tools and Supplies
• Debris pickup and/or debris bin service
• Logistical support
• Giveaways
• Publicity
Please click here to register. (This form works best with Google Chrome. Please do not use Explorer.)
If you need registration assistance, please contact adoptaspot@oaklandnet.com, or call (510) 238-7611.
Please register by Sunday, March 11, 2018 to ensure adequate planning and promotion time, as well as availability of requested tools and City services.
For those looking to join, rather than lead, projects, we will post opportunities at www.oaklandearthday.org. The interactive project map is updated weekly.
Oakland Public Works Takes on Illegal Dumping
Illegal dumping is the willful, intentional or negligent depositing, dropping, dumping, placing, or throwing of trash or other waste on the public sidewalks, streets, and parks.
- Illegal dumping creates public health hazards for residents and OPW staff alike
- Illegal dumping pollutes waterways, creeks and the bay through the City’s storm drains
- Illegal dumping discourages Oaklanders from enjoying public spaces like parks
- Illegal dumping harms local businesses by creating an unattractive environment for commerce
- Illegal dumping diverts city resources that could be used for beautification projects or other services
- Illegal dumping insults community pride
- Illegal dumping creates and perpetuates a negative perception that Oakland is a dirty city, unkempt and uncared for–which we know is wrong

Oakland Recycles
Recycling every day, at home, at work and at play, is an easy and rewarding practice. By adopting recycling and waste reduction habits, you can reduce pollution and fight climate change. Help Oakland recycle more by making a habit of recycling paper, cardboard, cans and bottles and batteries, and by eliminating wasteful habits. The Recycling Program oversees garbage and recycling services provided by Waste Management of Alameda County and California Waste Solutions and works to ensure that recycling is widely available.
