|Audience in the Rotunda Building at the Kick-off Meeting|
The project’s community kick-off event in early September attracted more than 160 participants. Mayor Libby Schaaf gave a passionate opening address, Council President Lynette Gibson-McElhaney shared inspirational words about the possibilities for Downtown.
After this opening, the planning team of City staff and the Dover Kohl & Partners consulting team introduced themselves and the downtown specific plan, Plan Downtown Oakland. The team explained the purpose and goals of the specific plan and outlined the two-year process to develop the Plan.

As people entered, they were given a single card and asked to fill in the prompt, "One word that describes my vision for Downtown Oakland is..." The results were tallied into a word cloud that shows how often the words were repeated, and helped guide planning for the charrette. At the end, participants were asked to fill out exit surveys, giving their feedback on the meeting and ideas for the Plan.
