Official Information about the 2016 Oakland Ghost Ship Warehouse Fire
On December 2, 2016 a fire at 1315 31st Avenue resulted in the tragic loss of 36 lives. The City of Oakland has been working closely with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to determine the source of the fire. This media release outlines the scope of the documents released today and this accompanying document provides clarity on the full range of legal justification for any redactions or exclusions. Public record requests submitted through the online database RecordTrac will be answered with links to the relevant documents on the City’s webpage.

31st Avenue Map and Planning & Building Complaints
The City of Oakland is releasing the permit and complaint history from the past 30 years from our Planning and Building Department related to the warehouse at 1315 31st Avenue and the neighboring vacant lot on a separate parcel at 1305 31st Avenue. These documents span a 30-year period roughly cover the length of time for which we have electronic records.
We have prioritized compiling the planning and building records related to the warehouse and the lot because the vast majority of questions from the public are related to the contact we have had through this city agency. We will be posting the remainder of the planning and building documents and public records from other city departments as we compile them.
It is important to note that there are several possible ways in which the City of Oakland primarily comes in contact with a property and the City’s responsibilities vary based on the agency which has the encounter and the nature of the circumstances. For example, if a member of the public contacts the city to complain about building code safety violations, the complaint would be directed to the Building and Planning Department.
