Today, the City of Oakland will host the 22nd annual Holiday Dinner from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to feed 2,000 seniors and those who are homeless and/or low income. Simultaneously, the final distribution for the 33rd annual Mayor’s Community Toy Drive will take place, wrapping up a successful tradition that brightened the holidays for more than 8,000 children from low-income Oakland families. more »

Oakland, CA — On December 19, 2013 at about 7:15 PM, Oakland Police officers on patrol responded to the 2900 block of Foothill Boulevard to a report of an armed robbery in progress. Upon arrival, the officers spoke to four victims who had just been robbed at gunpoint by two suspects. The suspects fled in a vehicle with the loss. more »

Oakland, CA — Holiday shoppers using BART will have the luxury of an escort from station to car at three locations on Friday, December 20: the West Oakland, Fruitvale and San Leandro BART stations. Oakland Police officers, joined by volunteers from the Oakland Police Department's Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association (CPAAA) and OPD cadets, continue their tradition of escorting holiday shoppers to their cars at West Oakland BART. more »

The Golden State Warriors Forward Marreese Speights, the Golden State Warriors, the Oakland Raiders, and Amerigroup Corporation saved the day for the City of Oakland’s Department of Human Services, Communities United Committee, Community Action Partnership and the Emergency Food Providers Committee by donating toward the continuance of their annual city-wide event to feed seniors and those who are homeless and/or low income. The Public Works Agency is kicking off the holiday season in the spirit of giving! Public Works joined the Family Support Services of the Bay Area’s “Sponsor a Family” Holiday Giving Program to help make the season’s spirits bright for some of our community.
Staffers across our diverse agency tackled the project in our typical “can do” style, and exceeded all expectations. With a list of families, their ages, sizes and “wish lists” provided by the Sponsor a Family program, Public Works employees dived eagerly into being Santa’s helpers to choose and purchase gifts so more families could celebrate the holiday season.
