DUI/Drivers License Checkpoint on Friday, August 10, 2012, at an undisclosed
location within the city limits between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. DUI
checkpoints are a proven enforcement tool effective in reducing the number of
persons killed and injured in alcohol involved crashes. Research shows that crashes
involving alcohol drop by an average of 20 percent when well-publicized
checkpoints are conducted often enough.

In preparation for the City of Oakland’s 12th Annual Art & Soul Festival, event organizers will close a few streets in downtown Oakland. A one-block section of Clay Street from 11th to 12th streets will be closed beginning at 9 a.m. on Thursday, August 2, 2012. 12th Street between Broadway and Clay Street will be closed beginning at 6 p.m. on Thursday, August 2, 2012. The balance of the street closures will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday, August 3, 2012, with the closure of 14th Street between Broadway and Martin Luther King, Jr. Way, 12th Street between Clay and Jefferson Street, Clay Street between 11th and 16th streets and Jefferson Street from 11th to 15th streets. These streets will re-open in time for the morning commute on Monday, August 6, 2012.

After eight weeks of both filling potholes and the milling and filling of City streets, Oakland Public Works Streets & Sidewalks Division staff completed their annual Pothole Blitz on June 22, 2012. An estimated 2,800 potholes were filled and over 72,000 square feet of new asphalt was laid down using the mill and fill process, which goes beyond dealing with the potholes. Milling and filling is a longer term solution consisting of the removal of a few inches of deteriorated asphalt and replacing it with new asphalt. While the cost is higher, the repair is more permanent in nature.

Oakland, CA —On July 6, 2012 at 6:25 PM, the Oakland Police Department
responded to the 1000 block of 102nd Avenue on a report of a shooting. When
officers arrived on scene, they observed Leonardis Holmes (DOB 3-5-45) suffering
from a fatal gunshot wound. Officers arrested Davis Bennett (DOB 2-10-42) in
connection with the shooting.
