The City of Oakland celebrates “Unity in Community.” Over 26,000 residents will attend National Night Out parties on Tuesday, August 3, 2010 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Some parties will receive a visit from Chief Batts and Mayor Dellums. Residents are hosting barbecues, ice cream socials, and other events designed to strengthen neighborhood spirit and unity.

Over the past several weeks of negotiations, the City of Oakland and the OPOA worked in close proximity to consider a host of offers and counter-offers. Unfortunately, the parties were not able to reach agreement. Due to budget considerations, the City will move forward with planned lay-offs of 80 police officers.

At an 11:00 a.m. media conference today, Mayor Ron Dellums praised Oakland community members—young people, social justice advocates, faith leaders and the business community—for coming together as a community to express their pain in response to the Mehserle verdict with passion, dignity and peace. He also lauded the efforts of the Oakland Police Department for showing great restraint and respect for people’s civil rights. He credited community partnerships and the professionalism of the police department with facilitating peaceful expressions following the announcement of the verdict.
