The City of Oakland will host a community workshop on the Draft Coliseum Area Specific Plan and the related Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) on Thursday, October 9. The event will be held at the 81st Avenue Branch Library, 1021 81st Avenue, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The workshop will be an opportunity for Oakland residents and business owners to learn about the two documents and comment on the Draft Plan and Draft EIR. more »
Oakland is being honored with the 2014 Community Project of the Year Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) for the West Oakland Youth Center.

A new federal grant will bring 15 additional police officers to Oakland neighborhoods, Congresswoman Barbara Lee announced today.
The new grant is the fourth awarded to Oakland from the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) office. Oakland is being awarded a one-year grant of $1.875 million. Grants were also awarded to the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office and the City of San Leandro, providing East Bay communities with funding for a total of 27 officers. more »

The City of Oakland has launched a survey to gain feedback from the Oakland community about their experiences with web-based City services. The survey will be used to inform development of a prototype for a new City website to better serve the community. The prototype will include ADA-compliant design, easy navigation, better search capability, and data-driven content while integrating with some of the City’s existing enterprise-grade, back-end systems. more »

When the 170th Academy graduates on October 31, 2014, the Department will have over 700 officers. The City of Oakland has issued a Notice of Parklet Opportunity (NPO) to bring additional parklets to Oakland’s various commercial corridors. Parklets are the latest trend to improve an area’s pedestrian friendliness by creating publicly accessible spaces to sit and interact. This round of proposals, announced on PARK(ing) Day, follows the initial launch of the pilot program in September 2011 and will result in up to 15 parklets being selected from all complete submissions received by November 17, 2014. more »
