The City of Oakland will mark the 25th Anniversary of the Loma Prieta Earthquake by hosting a community preparedness event on Friday, October 17. While bridging generations and communities through preparedness, the event will also reflect on that tragic event and honor those who lost their lives and the many heroes who risked their lives to aid others. The free event runs from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Cypress Freeway Memorial Park, near the site where 42 people lost their lives when the freeway collapsed. more »

The Oakland Public Library’s Carnegie-endowed Golden Gate Branch, located at 5606 San Pablo Avenue, will close temporarily, beginning Monday, October 20, 2014, for building repairs. Library administration expects the branch to remain closed for approximately three months, and will announce a specific date when work nears completion. more »
