Starting at about 8:30 pm, OPD issued two dispersal orders to clear the area at 14th and Broadway, 15th and Broadway/Telegraph, and Frank Ogawa Plaza. The orders came shortly after OPD had attempted to arrest an individual. A crowd of about 300 people surged forward and began throwing bottles and other objects. more »

Please be advised that a large crowd estimated to be between 3,000 and 5,000 people is marching towards Frank Ogawa Plaza. Given the size of the crowd, and to reduce potential traffic congestion and transit impacts, it may be advisable to stay away from the area around 14th and Broadway or take alternate routes. more »

Most of the activities so far have centered on the downtown core, with Frank Ogawa Plaza serving as a hub, and the activities have largely been peaceful. Today the Independent Monitor evaluating the Oakland Police Department’s compliance with the Negotiated Settlement Agreement (NSA) released their ninth quarterly report. The report, which evaluates the department’s progress on complying with 22 remaining active tasks under the NSA, covers the three-month period of October 1 to December 31, 2011. Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan was appointed Interim Chief on October 13, 2011, so this report covers the first quarter of NSA work under his leadership. more »

To keep the City of Oakland’s vehicular and pedestrian traffic safe, Oakland Public Works will conduct a Pothole Blitz again this year. This year’s Blitz will take place starting today, April 30, 2012, through June 22nd extending the effort by four weeks longer than last year. Each week, the Blitz will re-locate to another district in the City, starting on Broadway near Manila and Taft Avenues. more »
