From October 25th through October 27th, the City of Oakland Fire Department is hosting the Fire Service and Rescue component of Urban Shield 2013. The exercises will challenge teams in the fields of Urban Search and Rescue, Hazardous Materials and Water Rescue.
Continuing to add vibrancy and cultural richness to Oakland’s booming Uptown District, the City of Oakland’s Uptown ArtPark will present four dynamic, free performances by Gamelan Sekar Jaya and Ragged Wing Ensemble in its outdoor public spaces during October in recognition of National Arts & Humanities Month.
Imagine several acres of garden illuminated with weird and enchanting art installations created by local Bay Area artists. The Gardens at Lake Merritt will be filled with these and
other surprises during Oakland’s Autumn Lights Festival on Friday and Saturday, October 18 & 19, 2013 from 6:00 to 10:00 PM.
Electric fireflies flickering in the trees, glowing waterfalls, a flock of interactive books, a Polynesian paradise with hand-crafted tiki lanterns and hula girls projected on palm trees, a snail car spewing fire, and live fire dancers light the night. Music and sound installations surprise at every turn on the garden paths that are lit with hundreds of luminarias.
Attendees are invited to participate during the evening by coming dressed in illuminated garden attire.
A fundraiser for Oakland's hidden jewel, recently named one of “California's Top 5
Gardens” by VIA Magazine, The Gardens at Lake Merritt are located in the heart of Oakland
in Lakeside Park at 666 Bellevue Ave. Funds will be used for Garden improvements for the
enjoyment of the entire community.

Oakland’s City Administrator today received the final results of an audit she requested from City Auditor Courtney Ruby’s office to look into the City’s Workers’ Compensation contract. When she arrived in Oakland two years ago, City Administrator Deanna J. Santana requested that the City Auditor’s Office conduct an internal audit of the City’s risk management program. Separately she also requested several investigations regarding certain aspects of this program.
Today, the City of Oakland officially launched “RecordTrac,” a new web application to help the City manage and track incoming public record requests. RecordTrac, http://records.oaklandnet.com, improves transparency, allows users to track progress of their request and saves staff resources through more efficient request handling.
