This week, the League of American Bicyclists designated the City of Oakland a Silver Level Bicycle Friendly Community. This is another step up from the Bronze Level designation earned in 2010 and recognizes the ongoing efforts to improve bicycling undertaken by a broad range of stakeholders
The holidays are a joyous time for most. It’s also a time to focus
on the needs of those less fortunate. The City of Oakland’s Human Services Department,
Communities United Committee, Community Action Partnership and the Emergency Food
Providers Committee are pleased to announce our annual city-wide event to feed seniors and
those who are homeless and/or low income: The 23rd Annual Thanksgiving Dinner will be
held on Tuesday, November 25, 2014 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Oakland Marriott
City Center, 1001 Broadway, Oakland, CA 94607.
In December, the Oakland Public Library will distribute cards for its new “Winter Bingo” game, encouraging children in grades K-5, and parents of younger children and babies, to do activities that stimulate literacy and learning. Any child or parent may return a bingo card with five activities marked in a row to any Oakland Public Library between December 18, 2014, and January 31, 2015, to select a free paperback book to keep, as a prize.
The City of Oakland, in partnership with the Oakland Private Industry Council and the Oakland Public Library, will host an open house on Thursday, November 20. In addition to the services and enrichment programs offered at the library, 1801 Adeline Street now boasts comprehensive training and employment services on the second floor provided by the West Oakland Neighborhood Career Center and the West Oakland Job Resource Center. Reflecting the collaborative nature of the site, the open house celebrates the transformative services offered by all three partners. The free, public event runs from 1 to 3 p.m. with a short program at 1:30 p.m.
The City of Oakland, Human Services Department has established
two sites to operate “as-needed warming centers,” which will open in the event of
inclement weather conditions of 40 degrees below or 50% or greater chance of rain.
In the spirit of the holidays and to stimulate shopping in Oakland’s commercial districts in support of local merchants, the City of Oakland will offer free parking every Saturday between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, plus Plaid Friday which is November 28. Motorists should note time limits posted on the meter or kiosk (30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours or 5 hours). The program will also provide free parking at four city-owned garages and four City-owned lots equipped with meters.
The City of Oakland administrative offices will be closed on Tuesday, November 11, in observance of the Veterans Day holiday. Police, fire and emergency services are not affected during the holiday.

Oakland Police Chief Sean Whent was joined by Mayor Jean Quan and City Administrator Henry Garner, his command and Training staff.
