On June 13, 2013, at 12:50 PM, Oakland Police officers responded to the area of 8th Avenue and International Boulevard on a report of a strong arm robbery that had just occurred. Upon arrival, officers were flagged down by witnesses. The victim pointed out the two female juvenile suspects and stated that they took his cell phone. The two suspects were arrested in connection with the strong arm robbery. The loss was recovered.
On Tuesday June 25, 2013, 70 members from the Oakland Police Department (OPD) and 13 youth from the Oakland Police Activities League (PAL) will participate in a nine-mile portion of the Northern California Law Enforcement Torch Run, benefiting Special Olympics Northern California. As of June 24, the OPD team has raised $9,620, bringing them close to their goal.
On June 6, 2013, at 3:02 AM, Oakland Police officers were dispatched to the
4200 block of 12th Street to investigate a report of commercial burglary at a
business. Soon after officers arrived, they heard a noise coming from the business.
LED Streetlight Conversion
Following the success of a pilot program late last year, Oakland will be converting 30,000 existing High Pressure Sodium (HPS) cobra head streetlights with Light Emitting Diode (LED) streetlights. Replacement of the existing streetlight fixtures with the new LED fixtures will provide a better quality of light that will enhance public safety and help reduce crime. In addition, the conversion project will save the City money as the new LED technology is more energy efficient and the bulbs have a longer lifespan.

On June 12, 2013, at approximately 10:57 PM, officers responded to a report of a
shooting in the 5800 block of Market Street. Additionally, Shotspotter Technology
confirmed one gunshot activation from the area of 58th Street and Market.
The City of Oakland administrative offices will be closed on Friday, June 14, 2013, for a mandatory business closure day. This is the final business closure day for FY 2012-13. While the City’s administrative employees are out of the office, if a situation arises that requires more staffing, the City has a plan in place to call in additional resources. Police, fire and emergency services are not affected during the holidays or business closures.

Oakland, CA —Monday, June 10, 2013, the Oakland Police Department (OPD) will be holding a graduation ceremony and celebration for its 34th Citizens Police Academy this evening at the OPD Eastmont Substation. Chief Sean Whent will be in attendance. Thirty-two community members successfully completed the 14-week course.
On June 9, thousands of revelers enjoyed a fun-packed Sunday during Love Our Lake Day celebrating Oakland’s investment through Measure DD which has transformed Lake Merritt. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., residents and visitors walked, pedaled, strolled and jogged around the lake exploring the surrounding neighborhoods in a family-friendly setting at Oaklavía-Oakland Sunday Streets. At 2 p.m., U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee, Gov. Jerry Brown, Mayor Jean Quan, City Council President Patricia Kernighan and representatives from the Measure DD Community Coalition participated in the Lake Merritt Boulevard Grand Opening Dedication showcasing the beautiful new amphitheater and four-acre park at the south end of the lake.
On Saturday, June 8, 2013, the Oakland Police Department will continue implementation of its Neighborhood Policing Plan, putting into place leadership and teams for each of five Police Districts that together encompass the entire City. Districts 4 and 5, in operation since March, cover East Oakland. Districts 1, 2, and 3, hinging on Lake Merritt, cover West Oakland, North Oakland, and Central Oakland.
