In preparation for the start of the rainy season, the City of Oakland’s Public Works Agency is taking proactive measures to prepare for wet weather. During the last few months crews have been working to remove debris from storm drains and have deployed maintenance crews to address other storm-related issues. The innovative violence prevention work in Oakland under Measure Y is garnering national recognition from the federal government and beyond, as demonstrated by the City of Oakland’s recent receipt of two grant awards and a third partnership grant with Alameda County Probation. On September 19th, two robberies occurred in which female victims were targeted as they came home.
During the course of the robberies, the women were sexually assaulted. The incidents occurred in the
Lake Merritt area and may be committed by the same suspect. more »

Volunteers are needed for Oakland’s 15th annual Creek to Bay Day to help clean and beautify Oakland’s creeks, Lake Merritt and the Oakland Estuary. This event is part of the annual California Coastal Cleanup Day, sponsored by the California Coastal Commission. Volunteers will pick up trash, remove invasive plants, plant California native species and install educational storm drain markers around the city. more »
