The Oakland Police Department placed 2nd among SWAT teams in the recently completed Urban Shield 2011 Training Exercise.
In its 5th year, Urban Shield is the nation’s premiere tactical training exercise competition that tests the capabilities of first responders. The event is hosted by the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office and has obtained international recognition with representatives coming as far away as Israel and Jordan. more »
The Oakland Redevelopment Agency (ORA) has created an innovative program to combat graffiti on private property along neighborhood commercial corridors while providing young adults with training opportunities. Initially launched in the Coliseum and Central City East Redevelopment Areas, the Graffiti Abatement Program (GAP) has proven so successful that the Agency is now expanding the program to three additional Redevelopment Areas. more »

The City of Oakland has issued a Notice of Parklet Availability (NPA) for a pilot program to bring temporary parklets to Oakland’s various commercial corridors. Parklets are the latest trend to improve an area’s pedestrian friendliness by creating publicly accessible spaces to sit and interact. The pilot program will result in up to eight parklets being selected from all complete submissions received by the October 24th deadline. more »
