The City of Oakland has operated a temporary inclement weather shelter at the Oakland Army Base since 1999. On Wednesday, November 20, 2013, the City of Oakland’s temporary Winter Shelter will re-open for the season at the Henry Robinson Multi-Services Center, 559 16th Street, Oakland. Vouchers are available to both single men and women for up to 50 beds in the temporary Shelter (can only accommodate single adults without children). The Shelter hours are from 6:30pm to 7am. more »

Voters narrowly rejected the renewal of the Wildfire Prevention Assessment District in the mail-in election that ended this week, according to the City’s unofficial count. Of the 41,700 ballots issued, 12,318 were returned, for a 29.5% turnout rate. Voters cast 8,150 ballots in favor of renewing the assessment; 4,140 ballots were cast in opposition. That gave the renewal 66.3% support, which was three-tenths of a percent (0.3%) or 66 votes below the two-thirds support requirement to pass. more »
LED Streetlight Conversion Continues in Fruitvale District - Press Conference
The City of Oakland is currently converting 30,000 existing High Pressure Sodium (HPS) cobra head streetlights with Light Emitting Diode (LED) streetlights citywide.

The City of Oakland administrative offices will be closed on Monday, November 11, in observance of the Veterans Day holiday. While the City’s administrative employees are out of the office, if a situation arises that requires more staffing, the City has a plan in place to call in additional resources. Police, fire and emergency services are not affected during the holiday. more »
In preparation for the coming season, the Oakland Public Works Agency is taking proactive measures to get ready for wet weather. Annually, Public Works crews remove debris from storm drains, inlets, culverts, creeks and drainage structures in preparation for the winter months. Sandbags are available to residents & businesses when inclement weather is forecasted. There are also opportunities for volunteers to assist during the rainy season. more »
