The Oakland Police Department will be conducting a specialized Motorcycle Safety Enforcement Operations on May 23-24, 2016, in an effort to lower fatal collisions and injuries. Heavy construction will begin on the Embarcadero Bridge on Friday, May 13, 2016 with the closure of the old bridge. The Embarcadero Bridge, which spans the Lake Merritt Channel where it joins the Oakland-Alameda Estuary, will be replaced by a new, seismically safer structure with enhanced pedestrian and bicycle access.
Digital signs are placed on the roadway to alert roadway users of the upcoming closure date. Letters to residents and businesses in the area were also mailed, emailed and hand delivered so everyone could be aware of the changes.
During construction, the Embarcadero (between Estuary Park and 5th Avenue) will be closed, and through traffic will be detoured to 7th Street. more »

On Saturday, May 14, 2016, the Oakland Fire Department (OFD) in partnership with the American Red Cross, Oakland Black Firefighters Association (OBFFA), and the Bay Area Youth Emergency Medical Technician (BAY EMT) Program is launching a Home Fire Preparedness Campaign for Oakland residents. The Campaign will include: checking existing smoke alarms for functionality; and/or installing new smoke alarms when needed; and discussing fire safety tips with residents. Oakland and Piedmont will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony at 7:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 12th to celebrate the completion of the Grand Avenue roadway improvement projects running from Greenbank Avenue in Piedmont to Mandana Boulevard in Oakland. The event will be held in conjunction with Bike to Work Day at the Energizer Station sponsored by Piedmont Connect and Bike East Bay in the Grand Lake Ace Hardware parking lot at 1221 Grand Avenue.
