PARENT-CHILD PLAYGROUPS The Inclusion Center manages 5 parent-toddler playgroups throughout the City of Oakland. Our groups include free play, arts and crafts, circle time, fine and gross motor play, parent education, field trips, a healthy snack, and other opportunities for your little ones to develop the skills they need to be ready for kindergarten. Plus, the parents get to make new friends as well. See descriptions below for more information.
Sandboxes to Empowerment Playgroups, in partnership with nonprofits Lotus Bloom and MOCHA, are free playgroups for parents/caregivers and their young ones ages 0 to 5. These groups are on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30am - 12:00pm at the following centers: Mosswood Recreation Center, Carmen Flores Recreation Center, and Rainbow Recreation Center. These groups are funded through Oakland Fund for Children and Youth.
Pre-K Play are OPR's newest playgroups funded through First 5 Alameda County. These free, bilingual (English-Spanish) playgroups are offered on Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:30am - 12:30pm at Willie Keyes Recreation Center in West Oakland and Ira Jinkins Recreation Center in East Oakland.
The Inclusion Center provides an environment where people have an opportunity to shine regardless of their ability or disability. Our goal is to create an atmosphere of acceptance so that individuals with special needs acquire the confidence and skills to exercise their option to access mainstream programs and services. A component of our service is to include and educate people without disabilities so they may gain the benefit of knowing how to interact with their peers regardless of functioning level.
We offer homework assistance, recreation, and other developmental activities in an asset-rich, safe, and accessible environment for children and teens. Our preschool age parent-child playgroups (in 5 locations) are great place for children to socialize and attain developmental benchmarks. In addition to on-site programming, the Inclusion Center serves as a resource for people with special needs to access city-wide programs.
*We are closed during some holidays. Please contact the Inclusion Center for details.
The Inclusion Center is self sustaining through the support of Oakland Fund for Children and Youth and contracts for services.
