Youth In Action
Held annually since 2004, Youth In Action occurs during the month of October to celebrate and honor youth with disabilities between the ages of 14 and 21 years old. School and organization staff members nominate youth who have made significant contributions to their schools or communities. A dinner and awards ceremony is sponsored by the MCPD to publicly recognize nominees.
In October 2009, sixteen students were recognized at the Fifth Annual Youth In Action event held at the Lake Merritt Sailboat House for their leadership qualities and commitment to their communities. Nominees received a certificate of leadership recognition from Congresswoman Barbara Lee, a $20 gift certificate to Amazon.com, and a YIA logo-embossed mug. This year’s entertainment included a monologue by Afi Tiombe Kambon and a number of vocal arrangements performed by the Oakland Interfaith Youth Gospel Choir. Ms. Cristina Rubke, associate at Shartsis Friese LLP in San Francisco, gave this year’s keynote address.
