Who Works for the Oakland Police Department?
The work of the Oakland Police Department is handled by different groups within the Department.
| Sworn | Career peace officers are sworn to serve the people of Oakland. |
| Reserve Officers | Sworn reserve officers serve on a volunteer, part-time basis, performing all the duties of career police officers with the same responsibilities. |
| Cadets | Cadets are college students who receive a stipend while training part time in various aspects of police service. The program is designed for hardworking, ambitious young men and women between 18 and 20 who are considering careers in the field of law enforcement. |
| Civilians | Over 350 civilians support OPD's police officers. Civilian positions include police evidence technicians, police service technicians, neighborhood service coordinators, dispatchers, analysts and clerks. Certain divisions, including Fiscal Services, Communications, Records, and Personnel are almost completely staff by civilians. |
