On February 23, 2011, OPD, in conjunction with the Oakland Housing Authority, Oakland Unified School Police, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, took steps to reduce violence, offer safe passage for school children, and provide outreach to local citizens through a joint effort known as “Operation Sunrise.” As part of the operation, over 70 arrest warrants and probation/parole searches were executed.

On February 23, 2011, elements of the Oakland Police Department, the Oakland Housing Authority, the Oakland Unified School Police, CA Parole, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, all under the leadership of the Area 3 Commander Captain Ersie Joyner, conducted Operation Sunrise in the vicinity of Beat 26. The purpose of this operation was to reduce crime and the fear of crime on Beat 26 by dealing with violent crime, offering safe passage for school children, and providing outreach to local citizens.

In a case reported February 16, 2011, suspects identified as 44-year-old Oakland residents Larry Wilson, Jr. and 31-year-old Jerry Williams were connected to an a kidnapping case. Wilson was arrested February 10 but as of February 16, Williams was still being sought. On Feb 17th, media outlets reported that Williams was still being sought by Oakland Police and his picture was released to the public. The intense media attention convinced Williams to turn himself in to Oakland police officers.

Galvanized by the January 26 death of 1-year-old Mahetzi Perez-Maturano and knowing that her family needed help, Oakland police officers and staff began gathering money to donate to the family for funeral expenses. On February 15, we presented a check for $3,500 to the grieving father.

On February 15, 2011, at approximately 6:01 P.M., Oakland police officers were dispatched to the 3600 block of Grand Ave. to investigate a report of a serious collision involving an A.C. Transit Bus vs. pedestrian. Upon arrival, officers discovered the pedestrian lying in the roadway unresponsive with a serious head injury.

On the night of February 5, 2011, residents called the Oakland Police Department and reported that an unidentified woman had been chased down, kidnapped, and beaten by two unidentified males in the 1000 block of Aileen St. OPD identified two suspects: one has been arrested and the other is still being sought.

On February 12th, the Oakland Police Department served a search warrant at a residence on 61st Ave. The seizure is the largest recovery of narcotics in the City of Oakland in recent years, and represents a significant disruption in a major narcotics operation.

On November 3, 2010, at 6:30 p.m., OPD received an emergency call reporting gunshots in the 7800 block of Outlook Ave. Sean Michael Sullivan is believed to have invited the victims to his home and shot them over money that he owed them. There is a warrant out for his arrest for murder and attempted murder. Homicide Investigators have partnered with the U.S. Marshals in the search for Sean Sullivan. He should be considered armed and dangerous.
