NNO is a unique worldwide event that boosts awareness about how citizens can help prevent drug use and crime.
NNO has proven to be an effective, inexpensive and enjoyable program promoting neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships. The benefits our community derives extend well beyond that one night!
Sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, NNO is held the first Tuesday in August. In 2010, 29,000 Oakland residents participated in NNO by attending 450 parties hosted by neighborhoods across the city.
More than 37 million people around the world participated in last year’s NNO. Paricipants included citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations, and local officials from more than 10,000 communities in all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide.
National Night Out provides these lasting benefits to our community:
- Heightens crime and drug prevention awareness
- Generates participation and support for local anticrime programs such as Neighborhood Watch
- Strengthens neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships
- Sends a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back
National Night Out Activities
Cities, towns, and neighborhoods celebrate NNO with a variety of events and activities such as outdoor displays, block parties, cookouts, visits from local police, parades, contests and exhibits.
NNO has proven to be an effective, inexpensive and enjoyable program to promote neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships. Plus the benefits our community will derive from NNO will most certainly extend well beyond the one night.
