Oakland Mayor Jean Quan highlighted new developments in Oakland that will help drive the Bay Area’s future at the 2012 Economic Summit hosted by the SF Business Times on February 14, 2012. Both Mayor Quan and San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee were featured speakers.
"Oakland is on the Rise,” said Mayor Jean Quan in her first State of
the City address to the City of Oakland tonight. “It’s been a pretty good year for
Oakland, despite a few bumps.”
“Even while recovering from the worst national recession in decades and a
constant stream of state and federal cuts, we are making progress in jobs and
development. We are undergoing a renaissance in our thriving arts, cultural and
culinary scenes that reflects one of the most diverse cities in the world,” she said.
This week USA Today listed Oakland’s Chinatown as one of the top 10 places to celebrate the Lunar New Year, following on the heels of the New York Times listing Oakland as #5 in its annual 45 Places to go to in 2012, earlier this month.
Oakland ranked as the 5th most desirable destination to visit this year in “The 45 Places to Go in 2012.” The story appeared in the Travel section of The New York Times on January 8, 2012. Oakland placed between #4 London and #6 Tokyo in the coveted list and was the highest ranked North American city.
The Golden State Warriors invite fans attending their preseason game against the Sacramento Kings on December 17 at Oracle Arena to bring unwrapped toys to support the 2011 Oakland Mayor’s Community Toy Drive. The first 400 fans to bring a toy will get a voucher that gains them entrance to the Warriors post-game “Chalk Talk" with several Warriors players.
