Volunteer for Oakland
![]() | One of the challenges I made during my Inauguration Speech was to ask every Oakland resident to give one hour a week in community service—forming a Neighborhood Alert crime prevention or CORE Emergency Preparedness group on your block; adopting a drain, median or park, or volunteering at our Animal Shelter, the Oakland Zoo, the Oakland Museum of California, Children’s Fairyland or one of the many nonprofit organizations that serve Oakland. Our city is stronger when we build partnerships between residents and the city. I am particularly interested in recruiting volunteers to mentor 2000 of the most at-risk kids. Mentoring youth is a critical part of the City's One Plan for Oakland public safety plan. If we can help our at risk youth envision a more positive future by completing high school and finding that all important first job, we can create real change in Oakland. Volunteerism in Oakland is up and more and more of us are becoming engage in the heart and soul of the City:
