Our Upcoming Events
We are committed to “Strengthening Children, Youth and their Families” by providing program services that improve health, safety and quality of life.
Youth Advisory Commission and the Youth Leadership Development Team
The Youth Advisory Commission, composed of up to 25 young people between the ages of 13 and 21, promotes youth leadership and participation in civic activities. A voice for youth, the Commission advises City officials on issues of concern to schools, neighborhoods, and the larger Oakland community. A directory of youth services is produced every two years. The Youth Advisory Commission and the Youth Leadership Development team work together to generate positive outcomes for the youth of Oakland.
Oakland Fund for Children and Youth
The Oakland Fund for Children and Youth awards several million dollars in grants each year to non-profit community organizations and public agencies serving children and youth. The Planning and Oversight Committee, composed of young people and adults appointed by the Mayor and City Council, guides the Oakland Fund for Children and Youth toward its mission of building youth-oriented services while working toward long-term social change. A variety of programs is funded every year, with an emphasis on after school programs that support success in school, healthy transitions to adulthood, child health and wellness, and youth empowerment.
A Safe Walk to School Program
The presence of adult site monitors and parent volunteers at schools reduces the threat and incidence of violence and helps to assure the safety of children as they travel to and from school every day.
Summer Food Service Program
Oakland’s summer lunch program provides free and nutritious lunches for youth, assuring at least one healthy meal each day during the summer when most youth are out of school.
Violence Prevention and Public Safety—Oakland Unite
Funded by Measure Y, the Violence Prevention and Public Safety Act of 2004, creates a safe Oakland by dramatically reducing violence among youth and adults. Oakland Unite is a comprehensive and multifaceted effort weaving together social services, nonprofits, police, employment, schools, criminal justice, faith-based agencies and community members at the neighborhood level.
