Welcome to District 3!
Dear City of Oakland Family –
One of my first jobs was as an intern in the City of Oakland Health and Human Services under Susan Shelton. It’s hard to believe that was over 15 years ago.
Since then I’ve dedicated my career to housing and community development. Since 2001, I have served as the Executive Director and CEO of Neighborhood Housing Services of the East Bay, which is a HUD-approved non-profit dedicated to affordable housing development, counseling and advocacy.
I believe that my experience as the Executive Director of NHS has trained me to balance a large budget, make a payroll, and bridge the interests of the business community with the needs of the neighborhood. My work experience has taught me that a healthy city as one that balances a vibrant business sector with a commitment to economic justice for all residents
I’m not the first McElhaney to work for the City. My father-in-law retired after nearly three decades of service in public works. Throughout the campaign, I turned to city staff - friends, colleagues and strangers - to provide me a staff perspective on our challenges and solutions. In office, I will continue to learn from your insight and wisdom that you’ve gained from your time at City Hall. I also know that the last few years have not been easy, as the City has cut its budget and employees have made sacrifices.
It is with the utmost regard for the sacrifices that you have made and the experience that you possess that I hope to move forward with you in partnership to restore and fulfill Oakland’s greatness.
With deep Oakland-love,

Lynette Gibson McElhaney
