Housing
The lack of available housing in Oakland remains one of the biggest concerns of residents of this city, and Councilmember Nadel has made expanding the housing stock one of her biggest priorities. Oaklanders at all income levels have found it increasingly difficult to find housing that meets their needs, at a price that they can afford. Councilmember Nadel has spearheaded innovative programs to help reverse this trend, by requiring that new affordable rental developments include first time homebuyer houses; and new market rate developments include community benefits. Finally, Councilmember Nadel works to represent residents with the most challenges and often the least political representation. She chaired a Taskforce on Homelessness and Very Low Income Housing, which made a number of recommendations on how to preserve and increase housing and services for people at risk of becoming homeless. Recently built, currently under construction or in planning housing developments in District 3 include:
- Adeline lofts (affordable live/work)
- Magnolia Row (market rate condos)
- Mandela Gateway (mixed income- rental and ownership)
- West Grand Lofts (market rate live/work condos)
- Mandela Village (rental and condo mixed income - in design)
- 32nd and San Pablo (senior affordable rental - under construction)
- Avalon Bay Cox Cadillac site (Whole Foods Market)
- Telegraph Gateway (middle class condos - under construction)
- Army Base Winter Shelter (drop-in evening bed space)
